The Pathologist Assistant - PRN at Luminis Health in Annapolis, MD works closely with the pathology team to support diagnostic services. This position handles both surgical and autopsy specimens, focusing on precise preparation, dissection, and selection of samples for analysis. Accuracy and compliance with established laboratory guidelines are central to this role.
Main responsibilities
- Encourage teamwork and support process improvements within the laboratory, especially during periods with fewer specimens.
- Assist with collecting and grossly examining surgical and autopsy specimens to aid in diagnostic evaluations and reporting. Meet productivity standards and maintain low error rates.
- Prepare tissue samples and slides for frozen section procedures, ensuring quality results for pathologist review.
- Order and accession laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), accurately interpreting provider orders and applying correct test mnemonics.
- Maintain a safe and clean workspace by following protocols and helping coordinate workflow between departments.
- Monitor laboratory inventory, anticipate supply needs, and place orders to ensure efficient operations.
- Document technical information accurately in the LIS and act as a mentor and technical resource for colleagues and external contacts.
- Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, including performing preventive maintenance and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, including preparing investigative reports and communicating promptly about any delays.
- Train and mentor new staff, contribute to competency assessments, and pursue continuing education to maintain licensure and stay current in the field.
