Requirements: Proficiency in Machine Learning and Deep Learning, scientific programming (expertise in Python, knowledge of C++), and utilization of specialized frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX). Role overview

This Research and Development Engineer in AI position is a 24-month contract based in Brest, Bretagne, France. The role is tied to the Cluster SequoIA project, which is part of the France 2030 initiative. Cluster SequoIA works across fields such as cybersecurity, defense, environment, and oceanography, aiming to strengthen the AI research and innovation ecosystem. The engineer will work within the Lab-STICC team (Laboratory for Information, Communication, and Knowledge Sciences and Technologies).

What you will do

Develop advanced AI algorithms for academic research use.
Collaborate with project teams and the cluster’s engineer pool to deliver technical solutions for various labeled projects, including Chairs and European initiatives.
Support project leaders in implementing these solutions.
Monitor emerging methods and hardware architectures in the AI field.
Contribute to outreach through training sessions and scientific dissemination activities.

The project is led by GoodFloow, a packaging monitoring startup, and involves collaboration with researchers from IMT, INRIA, and IRCICA. The goal: develop reusable industrial packaging that can be traced and shared across industries. Project Context Reusable packaging is gaining ground in supply chains, helping companies cut costs tied to single-use packaging and reducing environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle. Despite these benefits, many users lack real-time insight into the condition of reusable packages, which can result in losses due to missing or damaged items. The project aims to address this gap by building monitoring solutions based on IoT sensors and deep learning, with machine learning models running directly on the sensors. Current Progress and Next Steps Initial research has produced neural network models that use accelerometer data to classify basic lifecycle events for packaging. However, these early models are not yet robust enough for real-world settings. Accelerometer data alone does not provide enough information for accurate event classification. The next phase of the project will focus on combining accelerometer data with inputs from additional sensors to improve model performance and reliability.
