We are looking for candidates who possess:A degree or equivalent qualification in Business, Engineering, Law, or a related field. Substantial experience in commercial management within sectors such as infrastructure, defense, or social infrastructure. A proven leadership track record or significant role with commercial and operational responsibilities. A strong grasp of construction/professional services procurement methods, contracting models, and frameworks. A deep understanding of pricing strategies and delivery models in relevant sectors. Experience in negotiation and dispute resolution. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to listen and persuade effectively. Proficiency in creating fee proposals, conducting financial analysis, and managing commercial reporting and risk mitigation.

About the job

As a Senior Commercial Manager at AECOM, you will take on the pivotal role of Commercial Lead within our Buildings and Places sector. This key position is focused on enhancing commercial performance, strategic planning, and contractual excellence across a wide array of projects.

Your responsibilities will include leading commercial operations, managing risks, and providing expert commercial guidance to Sector leadership, ensuring alignment with our business objectives for sustainable growth. This role serves as a vital link between operational needs and corporate functions such as finance, legal, and risk management.

This position offers a unique blend of strategic oversight and hands-on management, allowing you to shape business outcomes in diverse sectors including infrastructure, defense, and social projects.

The role supports hybrid working arrangements from our primary UK&I offices, with regular travel to client sites and AECOM regional offices as required.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Planning

  • Formulate and execute commercial strategies for bids that align with Sector/Sub-Sector objectives and growth initiatives.
  • Advise Sector leadership on market risks, opportunities, pricing strategies, and commercial trends to enhance bidding efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Commercial to foster innovation within the commercial operations.
  • Work closely with the Buildings and Places commercial team to maintain a consistent approach across sectors and report directly to the Head of Commercial.

Contract & Risk Management

  • Supervise the negotiation and execution of prime contracts, subcontracts, NDAs, MOUs, teaming agreements, and joint venture arrangements, in collaboration with the legal team.
  • Ensure rigorous management of changes with a focus on their commercial implications, alongside general risk and opportunity management.
  • Embed comprehensive risk management procedures throughout the bidding and delivery phases.
  • Resolve contractual disputes and claims effectively and promptly.
  • Lead governance processes within the Sector, interfacing with corporate functions such as legal, tax, ORM, and treasury.

Commercial Oversight

  • Oversee and support financial project budgeting, ensuring alignment with effective project delivery models.
  • Provide project performance reporting across the portfolio with assistance from the finance function.
  • Collaborate with project leads to identify and evaluate changes.
  • Monitor KPIs and cash flow to ensure commercial objectives are achieved.
  • Deliver regular reports to Sector stakeholders as required.
