About the job
Inertia is on the forefront of fusion energy research, and we are looking for a highly skilled Laser Scientist to lead the design and testing of high-power laser systems integral to our fusion energy initiatives. This role is pivotal in the creation of the most advanced average power pulsed lasers, which will serve as the foundational 'unit cell' of our future power plant. Collaborating with industry leaders, government entities, and academic experts, you will play a key role in developing a demonstrator beamline capable of delivering 10 kJ at 10 Hz with an impressive 10% wall-plug efficiency utilizing diode-pumped solid-state laser technology (DPSSL).
Primary Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive modeling and simulation for high-energy, high-average power laser systems.
Evaluate various architectural solutions in collaboration with industrial partners and national laboratories to identify the most effective approach.
Lead a team dedicated to the design, installation, commissioning, and optimization of cutting-edge laser systems and testing facilities.
Collaborate with engineering and optical testing teams to ensure the timely design and delivery of intricate laser systems.
Qualifications and Experience:
PhD in Laser Physics or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
Proficient in laser system design utilizing simulation software such as Miro or Rsoft, as well as laser energetics models and non-linear optical system analysis (SNLO or equivalent).
Experience in the modeling and operation of diode-pumped solid-state laser systems and their components.
