About the job
About Us
Standard Subsea is an innovative startup focused on revolutionizing the offshore industry with our cutting-edge unmanned systems. We specialize in the development of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) that autonomously deploy tethered remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for the inspection of subsea pipelines, telecom cables, and other critical offshore infrastructure. Our mission is to provide reliable subsea awareness at a significantly reduced cost compared to traditional crewed vessels.
The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design of our autonomous surface vessel platform. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate closely with our Chief Technology Officer to define system architecture while owning major mechanical subsystems, guiding them from detailed design through to fabrication, integration, and field testing. This is a hands-on position ideal for an engineer who has experience in delivering hardware and understands the real-world challenges that designs can face in operational environments.
Responsibilities
Oversee the detailed design and execution of major mechanical subsystems in alignment with the platform architecture.
Transform system-level requirements into practical, manufacturable mechanical designs.
Create CAD models, drawings, and release packages for fabrication and assembly.
Design structures, mounts, housings, and interfaces to withstand marine loads and environmental challenges.
Facilitate the integration of mechanical systems with propulsion, electrical, and autonomy hardware.
Assist in prototyping, assembly, and on-water testing activities.
Analyze field failures and iterate designs based on operational data.
Collaborate with vendors and fabricators to optimize design for manufacturability and streamline supply chain processes.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
4 to 8 years of experience in designing and deploying mechanical systems within marine, robotics, aerospace, defense, or industrial sectors.
Proven track record of taking hardware from prototype to fully operational systems.
Strong proficiency in CAD and drawing practices suitable for actual fabrication.
Hands-on experience with hardware, tools, and testing setups is essential.
Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with a system-level technical lead.
