About the job

Waymo, a leader in autonomous driving technology, aims to be the world’s most trusted driver. Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has dedicated itself to creating the Waymo Driver, The World’s Most Experienced Driver™, to enhance mobility and prevent the tragic loss of lives in traffic accidents. The Waymo Driver not only facilitates our fully autonomous ride-hail service, but it is also versatile enough to be integrated into various vehicle platforms and applications. With over ten million successful rider-only trips and more than 100 million miles driven autonomously on public roads, along with extensive simulation across 15+ U. S. states, our technology is paving the way for the future of transportation.

The Software Quality Operations (SWQOps) team plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and quality of the Waymo Driver. Our mission is to create a dynamic and scalable operation that is increasingly driven by AI, providing the essential insights needed for the confident deployment and expansion of Waymo’s autonomous vehicle service.

Why This Team is Essential to Waymo's Success:

As Waymo experiences unprecedented growth, expanding into approximately 20 new cities by the end of 2026 and launching various vehicle platforms, the SWQOps team, particularly our Technical Specialists, is crucial for facilitating this expansion safely and efficiently.

Our Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing a single, automated, end-to-end machine learning flywheel for the Waymo Driver, which will serve as the core engine for scaling our technology, enabling faster operational design domain (ODD) expansion, quicker resolution of driving issues, and reducing the engineering workload required for driver maintenance and improvement.
  • Mitigating risks in new deployments by meticulously analyzing driving events, discovering issues, and continuously monitoring the field. SWQOps provides early warnings and critical insights to ensure operational resilience and safety, especially as Waymo enters new cities and ramps up platforms like W12.
  • Facilitating market expansion by integrating into every stage of Waymo's market entry framework, from initial city evaluations (OK2Plan) to scaling operations (OK2Scale). We deliver data analysis, policy development, and quality assurance to eliminate bottlenecks, ensuring swift progress in our market expansion efforts.
  • Enhancing engineering efficiency through essential performance evaluations and issue deep-dives.
