About the job

Waymo is at the forefront of autonomous driving technology with a commitment to becoming the world’s most trusted driver. Originating as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, our focus has been on developing the Waymo Driver, The World’s Most Experienced Driver™, which enhances mobility access and aims to significantly reduce traffic-related fatalities. The Waymo Driver powers our fully autonomous ride-hail service, applicable across various vehicle platforms and use cases. With over ten million rider-only trips logged, our technology has safely navigated more than 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions more in simulations across 15+ states in the U. S.

The Software Quality Operations (SWQOps) team is pivotal in facilitating safe and effective expansions into new international markets and nurturing mission-critical workflows. Our aim is to create a flexible and scalable operation, increasingly leveraging AI to provide essential insights that empower the confident deployment and growth of Waymo’s autonomous vehicle services.

In this hybrid role, you will report to our Program Manager.

Why Our Team Matters to Waymo’s Success:

Waymo is experiencing rapid growth, entering new cities (including international markets like London and Tokyo) and introducing new vehicle platforms. The SWQOps team, especially our Technical Specialists, plays a crucial role in this expansion, enabling safe and efficient scaling. We are on the front lines of:

  • International Readiness and New Market Preparation: Actively updating triage policies and establishing a Voice of Customer in new regions. Through diligent triage of driving events, discovering issues, and continuous field monitoring, SWQOps delivers early warnings and vital insights to our Product and Data Science teams.
  • Developing a cohesive, automated machine learning flywheel for the Waymo Driver. A successful flywheel will be foundational in scaling our technology, expediting international growth, swiftly addressing driving issues, and significantly reducing the engineering effort required for maintaining and enhancing the driver.
  • Enhancing Engineering Efficiency: By managing essential performance evaluations, in-depth issue analyses, and dataset curation, SWQOps collaborates effectively, allowing Waymo’s Engineering, Systems Engineering, Simulation, and Data Science teams to concentrate on their primary tasks of advancing the Waymo Driver.
  • Workflow Incubation and Development: Cultivating impactful workflows and ensuring their readiness for automation and long-term operational excellence.
