Qualifications Master’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering is required; a PhD is preferred. Familiarity with hazard intensity measures (e.g., ground motion spectral acceleration, gust and sustained wind speeds, flood inundation depth). Understanding of building responses to natural hazards and associated damage. Proficiency in QGIS or ArcGIS software is a plus. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, strong attention to detail, and organizational abilities. Knowledge of statistics and probability is advantageous. Willingness to travel domestically or internationally on short notice. Previous experience in catastrophe modeling is a plus. Familiarity with C# programming language is an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and enhance building vulnerability models addressing various natural disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and floods.
  • Gather, organize, and analyze catastrophe loss data to inform our modeling efforts.
  • Conduct validation tests to ensure accuracy in model loss estimates.
  • Prepare detailed technical documents and engaging presentations about scientific models.
  • Assist in KCC’s Live Event response, which entails creating event footprints, estimating insured losses, and performing post-event damage assessments for global natural disasters.
