About the job

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) is excited to announce its Summer 2025 Legal Internship program, seeking enthusiastic and driven law students to join our team. This full-time internship spans a 10-week period and operates on a hybrid work schedule, with in-office attendance required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while remote work is permitted on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Interns at ACLU-NJ will engage in a diverse array of civil rights and liberties initiatives, contributing to meaningful work that impacts various issues affecting our communities.

Intern responsibilities include collaborating closely with staff to perform legal research, drafting legal memoranda, and potentially creating legal or advocacy correspondence. Additionally, interns will analyze upcoming state and local legislative or regulatory proposals that influence civil rights and liberties in New Jersey. Opportunities may also arise for interns to attend oral arguments in state and federal courts, as well as participate in advocacy meetings and events with clients, community partners, and government officials.

We are committed to assisting students in obtaining academic credit and/or funding for a full summer experience with us, offering at least partial stipends regardless of other funding sources.

How to Apply: Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript (if available), and a writing sample of 5 to 10 pages, double-spaced. In your cover letter, please include insights on how your background and experiences could enhance the diversity and cultural vitality of our team and advocacy efforts. Upload your resume in the designated field and all other documents as a single PDF in the cover letter field.

For 1Ls without a writing sample, please submit an alternative piece of writing (e.g., from a college course) along with a brief document indicating when you anticipate having a legal writing sample available (e.g., by the end of the fall semester).
