The Office of Building Water System Oversight (BWSO) within the Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and compliance of engineered water systems across New York City's diverse environments. This dynamic role involves conducting thorough inspections to uphold regulations that enhance the operation of cooling towers, water tanks, evaporative condensers, plumbing systems, and wastewater facilities, ultimately safeguarding public health and the environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive field inspections throughout the five boroughs, assessing water supply and distribution systems, cooling towers, and wastewater management.
- Review and evaluate water management plans, equipment operation records, and perform physical inspections of mechanical and chemical treatment systems, including water quality analysis and sample collection.
- Compile and ensure accuracy in inspection reports per Bureau protocols, including follow-up assessments to address public health risks.
- Provide exceptional customer service to building owners, facility managers, and other stakeholders, offering guidance on regulatory compliance and corrective measures.
- Advise on strategies to enhance compliance and promptly address potential environmental health hazards in line with NYC and NYS regulations.
- Summarize inspection outcomes and prepare documentation for administrative hearings related to violations.
- Lead emergency response efforts for incidents identified by the Legionnaires' disease surveillance system, adhering to established protocols.
- Train staff in effective water sampling techniques and documentation for laboratory analysis.
- Conduct surveys to identify risks associated with Legionella exposure.
- Provide technical assessments of engineering plans and specifications related to water supply and cooling systems.
