Qualifications

Lead a feature squad end-to-end: managing people, processes, and technical direction. Oversee performance management for your engineers, including regular one-on-ones, growth discussions, constructive feedback, and formal evaluations. Collaborate closely with your PM and Designer to create quarterly project plans that effectively balance customer value, technical health, and business impact. Guide your team through the complete Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), with competence and a strong opinion at each stage, from system design to production observability. Contribute to the codebase as a technical force multiplier by addressing gaps, enhancing quality, and exemplifying engineering standards. Work within our quarterly planning and bi-weekly cycle, ensuring your squad maintains focus and predictability. Foster a healthy remote-first team culture, emphasizing clear communication, strong asynchronous habits, and flexibility aligned with team needs. Engage in hiring processes—sourcing, interviewing, and securing engineering talent for your squad and the broader organization.

About the job

Shopmonkey is seeking an Engineering Manager I to spearhead one of our autonomous feature squads. In this role, you will take charge of the daily engineering leadership for a cross-functional team comprising a Product Manager, a Designer, and 4-5 engineers, overseeing a significant segment of the Shopmonkey platform. This is not just a project management position; you will be hands-on with the code and passionate about the software development process, ensuring high-quality results at every stage, from scoping and design to implementation, testing, release, and iteration.

Your primary responsibility will be to enhance the performance and effectiveness of your team through coaching, removing obstacles, and identifying unseen gaps. You will also directly contribute to the codebase, not as a primary feature developer but as a technical force multiplier, improving code quality and setting engineering standards by leading through example.

Our platform operates on two main monorepos (backend and frontend) utilizing TypeScript throughout. The technology stack includes React, Node.js, Next.js, Redux, and Redis for application development, CockroachDB and ClickHouse for data management, Synadia NATS for messaging, and Google Cloud Platform for infrastructure. Familiarity with all these technologies is not required; we value strong fundamentals and a willingness to learn.
