About the job
About Voltex Electrical
Voltex Electrical stands as one of Australia’s foremost electrical wholesale distributors, boasting a rich history of 25 years and an expanding national presence. Our IT team is the backbone of the company's operations, managing the platforms, systems, and data that drive our business success , encompassing e-commerce, ERP, logistics, and customer experience.
We are currently undergoing a strategic transformation aimed at establishing robust leadership, enhanced delivery systems, and a thriving engineering culture to propel us into our next phase of growth. This position is pivotal in guiding that transformation.
The Opportunity
This is not a maintenance position; it's an opportunity to be part of a dynamic reshaping of the IT organization. You will help implement new leadership frameworks, engineering standards, and a significant transition from reactive to proactive, outcome-focused delivery.
As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the health of your team and its delivery processes. Your role will involve coaching engineers, establishing repeatable processes, and collaborating with product and business stakeholders to translate strategic goals into tangible results. The aim is to create scalable solutions rather than merely being the leading individual contributor.
If you have experience transforming teams from being busy but disconnected from business outcomes to being highly effective and results-oriented, this role is designed for you.
Your Responsibilities
Team Leadership & People Management
- Recruit, onboard, mentor, and retain engineers; foster a strong team culture.
- Conduct effective one-on-one meetings, performance evaluations, and career development plans.
- Proactively address performance challenges with fairness and transparency.
- Establish team norms focusing on quality, accountability, and collaboration.
Delivery Execution & Predictability
- Oversee the health of team delivery: planning, prioritization, sequencing, execution, and release readiness.
- Manage the team's delivery rhythm (sprint-based for Delivery teams; flow/kanban for Platform teams).
- Enhance clarity of work: develop clear tickets, acceptance criteria, dependency mapping, and risk management strategies.
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks early , whether related to processes, staffing, technical debt, or ambiguous requirements.
Systems Thinking
- Replace ad-hoc heroics with systematic approaches: implement repeatable processes, establish guardrails, and create thorough documentation.
- Boost engineering throughput while maintaining high standards of quality (testing, CI/CD practices, code reviews, and learning from incidents).
- Develop operating mechanisms: define completion criteria, conduct incident postmortems, set quality gates, and create release playbooks.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Product Managers, Data, Infrastructure, and business stakeholders to align objectives with deliverable plans.
- Communicate trade-offs, timelines, and risks transparently to executives and stakeholders.
