Organization
The Chief Electrician plays a pivotal role, directly reporting to the Chief Engineer.
Authority
Delegated authority by the Chief Engineer to carry out assigned responsibilities. The Chief Electrician and the Electrical Technical Officer (ETO) are never absent from the ship simultaneously. The Chief Engineer must always be informed if either is away.
Key Responsibilities
The Chief Electrician's duties encompass, but are not limited to:
▪ Overseeing the operation and maintenance of the electrical systems and plant throughout the ship in accordance with regulations and approved procedures.
▪ Ensuring that all electrical equipment and machinery on board, including elevators, fire alarm systems, electric motors, alternators, control systems, and associated systems, are effectively operated and maintained according to applicable regulations and international standards.
▪ Being present in the Engine Control Room during maneuvers, drills, and emergencies.
▪ Collaborating closely with the Chief Engineer to ensure all waste treatment and environmental systems within the department comply with international regulations and environmental policies.
▪ Keeping abreast of and understanding the Chief Engineer's standing orders.
▪ Keeping the Chief Engineer informed about the ship's electrical installations.
▪ Monitoring the public address system and speakers used onboard.
▪ Assigning tasks to the Assistant Electrician and ensuring their proper execution.
▪ Engaging in short and long-term planning for service, maintenance, and repairs of electrical installations.
▪ Submitting timely requisitions for electrical spare parts and supplies to the Chief Engineer.
▪ Documenting surveys of electrical installations.
▪ Participating in routine inspections alongside the Chief Engineer.
▪ Familiarizing with regulations and work procedures related to assigned tasks.
▪ Updating daily records of completed work, spare parts utilized, and current stock levels.
▪ Testing and controlling alarm systems, fire detection, and external communication loudspeakers.
▪ Monitoring the performance of TVs and DVD players in guest cabins.
▪ Assisting with events such as shows, lectures, and presentations as needed.
▪ Participating in functional tests as required by the Chief Engineer.
▪ Controlling hydraulic power packs and watertight doors.
▪ Overseeing automation in engine and control rooms.
▪ Always utilizing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) provided.
