Creating waterproof concrete structures such as tunnels, basements, and underpasses requires a careful equilibrium between material behavior and practical execution. Previously, the waterproofing class TC1 was often the standard (with self-healing as a mechanism to seal shrinkage cracks), but this approach is now being challenged by cement types with low Portland clinker content. Consequently, self-healing cannot be taken for granted.The demand for waterproofing class TC2, which prohibits the occurrence of continuous cracks, is becoming increasingly relevant. Practical experience has shown that the use of steel fibers has a promising effect on waterproofing and is occasionally already being applied in temporary underwater concrete. However, there currently lacks a widely accepted, demonstrable methodology to meet TC2 with steel fiber concrete in permanent waterproof constructions. Clients understandably raise critical questions about this, and the sector is in search of a robust foundation.Therefore, we are looking for a motivated TU graduate student to investigate this topic.The ResearchYou will have considerable freedom to determine your own focus and research questions.
