About the job

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) stands as the largest entity in the U. S. dedicated to combating and preventing homelessness. Collaborating with various City agencies and nonprofit organizations, DHS aims to avert homelessness before it manifests, diminish street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and link individuals and families to stable housing, all while emphasizing accountability, empathy, and equity.

DHS is committed to ongoing enhancement and employs innovative strategies to furnish high-quality services that facilitate a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. With a vast team and a multi-billion-dollar budget, the agency oversees numerous facilities to cater to the diverse requirements of New Yorkers facing homelessness.

The Division of Shelter Intake is charged with managing daily operations at the agency's intake and assessment sites for Single Adults, Adult Families, and Families with Children, including both directly operated and contracted providers. We are seeking to recruit six (6) Administrative Directors of Social Services, Level M-I, to serve as PATH Managers within the Shelter Intake Division's PATH diversion program.

As an Administrative Director of Social Services, Level I (M1), you will oversee a large staff team that reviews applications from clients seeking access to City-run shelters and other housing managed by DHS. You will also manage client flow and the referral process, including pre-screening, registration of applicants' interviews, and the investigation process. Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring referrals to HRA Diversion and NoVA Units, Medical Providers, Prevention Services Homebase, ACS, and DOE.
  • Overseeing the placement process with the Agency’s HERO Unit to ensure appropriate shelter assignments.
  • Planning and directing thorough investigations and assessments of possible fraudulent practices.
  • Maintaining records and preparing reports for the Director of the PATH Unit.
  • Providing direct supervision for social services, facilities management, transportation, medical services, food services, and security during assigned shifts.
