About the job
At Rula, we champion the belief that mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. We understand that mental health challenges are intricate and varied, and we strive to treat individuals holistically rather than merely addressing symptoms.
Our mission is to foster a society where mental health is recognized and valued as a core component of overall well-being, free from stigma and marginalization.
By delivering compassionate, evidence-based care, we empower individuals to take control of their mental health and reach their fullest potential. Our passion lies in making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing mental health difficulties, and we are committed to being a catalyst for positive change in the mental healthcare landscape.
Rula operates as a remote-first organization, welcoming talent from most U. S. states, with the exception of Hawaii.
About the Role
As the Principal AI Engineer at Rula, you will take the lead on foundational AI initiatives that dictate how AI integrates into mental healthcare. This position prioritizes the development of robust, production-ready generative AI systems that enhance patient engagement, streamline provider workflows, and optimize clinical operations at scale.
Your work will bridge the gap between architecture, applied research, and practical constraints. Responsibilities will include designing essential AI platforms, establishing technical standards for safety, reliability, and performance, and making critical decisions on deploying advanced AI within a regulated, high-stakes environment. Your goal will be to ensure AI remains genuinely beneficial in clinical settings while upholding trust and achieving positive outcomes.
This role demands hands-on involvement and real technical ownership. You will define system architecture, resolve complex engineering challenges, and act as a technical multiplier for fellow engineers across product surfaces. Your success will be measured by your ability to create solid foundations that inspire confidence and can withstand scale, scrutiny, and real patient impact.
This opportunity is less about exploring the latest technological frontiers for their own sake and more about responsibly integrating AI into everyday mental healthcare. You will shape not only our immediate AI development direction but also how AI advances within the broader care ecosystem over time.
