Responsibilities:Develop high-performance numerical solvers for simulating the physics of advanced metal 3D printing systems. Implement numerical simulation models for real-time or near-real-time performance on HPC or GPU platforms. Collaborate with software engineers to construct and deploy physics-based and data-driven models of the laser powder bed fusion process. Integrate low-level solvers into simulation pipelines and interface with hardware systems. Guide the incorporation of computational geometry and meshing techniques to facilitate large-scale, physics-driven simulations. Architect simulation modules for execution on specialized compute hardware including FPGAs and GPUs. Contribute to the development of model-predictive control strategies in collaboration with control engineers. Generate and maintain comprehensive documentation for all algorithms, solvers, and integrated systems. Basic Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics, physics, computer science, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.10+ years of professional experience in developing custom simulation solvers, preferably with a PhD in one of the aforementioned disciplines. Extensive knowledge of physical simulation methodologies and multi-physics phenomena. Demonstrated capability to develop sophisticated simulation models from the ground up. Strong collaborative skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.

Role overview

As Principal Simulation Engineer, the main responsibility is to develop physics-based and data-driven models for Freeform’s automated, production-scale metal 3D printing platform. The work centers on building detailed simulations for technical challenges that may not have existing solutions. Collaboration with colleagues from software, hardware, and manufacturing is a key part of the process, along with rapid iteration to push the technology forward.

  • Develop and improve physical and multi-physics simulation models for metal 3D printing processes
  • Tackle open-ended or novel technical problems using first-principles modeling
  • Work closely with software, hardware, and manufacturing teams
  • Support the creation of high-quality, automated production systems

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with physical simulations and multi-physics phenomena
  • Ability to build models from scratch for undefined or previously unsolved problems
  • Comfort working in an interdisciplinary, rapidly iterating setting
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative working style
  • Background in 3D printing is not required
