Key Responsibilities:Design, develop, and implement security features with a focus on safety and security. Collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure safe and compliant architectural and implementation decisions. Lead by example in code reviews, decision-making processes, and promoting a culture of transparency, empathy, and collaboration. Develop, assess, and deploy security features produced by both the Foundation and community contributors. Conduct internal and external security and privacy assessments. Maintain and address technical debt in security and privacy-critical components. Provide support for application security and privacy incidents and operational matters. Required Skills and Experience:5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally with a focus on security or privacy. Proficiency in modern web applications, primarily PHP and JavaScript. While deep PHP experience is not mandatory, a strong engineering and back-end web development background is essential.

You bring extensive experience as a software engineer with a focus on building security features within large-scale systems. Your understanding of testing methodologies, documentation practices, and the common challenges in developing secure web applications will be invaluable. A passion for the Wikimedia Foundation's mission is essential, as our work positively impacts thousands of editors on a daily basis.

In this role, you will primarily work on our MediaWiki platform, which powers Wikipedia. As one of the top 10 websites globally, maintaining high-performance standards while addressing modern security challenges, such as adopting advanced authentication technologies and preventing bot-related abuse, is crucial. You will also plan and implement enhancements to our security architecture to defend against emerging threats.
