Key Responsibilities:Lead the hands-on creation of cutting-edge fault-tolerant quantum algorithms with substantial scientific and commercial impact across various industry sectors. Conduct in-depth resource analyses of quantum algorithms and perform SWOT evaluations of FTQC methodologies compared to NISQ and classical techniques. Provide authoritative expertise in FTQC algorithms, articulating current state-of-the-art technologies, scaling behaviors, trade-offs, and cross-over points to stakeholders. Facilitate productive technical collaborations with multidisciplinary teams to identify, define, and resolve real-world challenges using IonQ’s trapped-ion quantum computing technology. Advance the adoption of benchmark-setting methodologies, resource estimation metrics, and analytical tools. Create a portfolio of foundational intellectual property and high-impact peer-reviewed publications; represent IonQ in engagements with clients and at industry conferences.

We seek a Staff Scientist – Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms to spearhead the technical advancements in harnessing IonQ’s quantum computers for developing unique quantum solutions that deliver significant societal benefits. In this pivotal role, you will be an integral part of a dynamic, cross-functional team dedicated to tackling the world’s most complex challenges with the industry’s leading quantum computers.

As a hands-on expert in fault-tolerant algorithms, you will explore the next generation of quantum applications expected to outperform traditional classical methods. Your contributions will include the development of quantum algorithms, foundational intellectual property, computational resource models, strategic roadmaps, and comprehensive workflows capable of disrupting the computing landscape. You will collaborate closely with product, engineering, marketing, sales, operations, and external stakeholders to generate innovative ideas, propose ambitious multi-year projects, and represent IonQ at prominent technical conferences.
