About the job

About the Role:

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will play a vital role in assisting the design and analysis of mechanical systems and test fixtures for cutting-edge biotechnology and life sciences instrumentation. This position involves conducting feasibility testing and gathering data on new and revised designs. You will support the R&D engineering team in detailed design preparation for test equipment, test setups, data analysis, and documentation.

We are looking for a motivated and meticulous Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our Hardware Engineering team for a 3-month summer internship in 2026. This role is crucial for supporting product testing and validation efforts for our ultra-precision life sciences instrumentation, including components for automation and fluid handling. The ideal candidate will possess a foundational understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles and a strong eagerness to gain hands-on experience in testing, small-scale fixture design, and data analysis.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Test Fixture Design and Modeling: Collaborate in the design and modeling of small mechanical test fixtures using CAD software (SolidWorks) for specific component or system validation in life science instruments.
  • Experimental Execution: Conduct mechanical, thermal, or functional tests on prototypes and existing designs, often requiring precise control of movement or fluids.
  • Data Acquisition and Light Coding: Assist in establishing data logging and instrumentation setups. Perform light coding tasks (e.g., in Python or MATLAB) for data acquisition, reduction, or basic control of test sequences involving sensors and actuators.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze and interpret collected test data to identify performance metrics and areas for improvement, focusing on precision, repeatability, and reliability.
  • Design Support: Work with senior engineers to review test results and suggest minor design updates or modifications based on findings, emphasizing Design for Reliability and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
  • Documentation: Aid in the preparation of detailed documentation, including test procedures, result summaries, and contributions to documentation.
  • System Understanding: Support testing related to electro-mechanical components, fluidic systems (pneumatic or microfluidic), and structural elements typical in laboratory automation.
