Ideal Candidate ProfileProven experience as an MLRO or Deputy MLRO within the UK financial services sector, preferably in fintech, payments, or e-money. Thorough understanding of UK AML/CTF regulations, JMLSG guidance, and law enforcement reporting frameworks. Strong analytical skills to assess high-risk cases, transaction monitoring alerts, and complex CDD/EDD decisions, translating financial crime risks into effective compliance measures that support business growth. Ability to harmonize commercial objectives with regulatory responsibilities and communicate effectively with the FCA and senior management. Eligibility for or current approval for FCA SMF17 designation.

Team Overview

At SumUp, our Governance, Risk, and Compliance team is integral to our commitment to responsible operations across global markets. In the UK, we are experiencing significant growth in our financial crime function and are seeking a dedicated individual to lead this crucial area. As the UK MLRO, you will bear statutory responsibility for SumUp's Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorism Financing (CTF) program, serving as the primary liaison with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and UK law enforcement regarding all financial crime issues. Your expertise will directly influence how SumUp navigates and expands within the UK market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage SumUp's UK AML/CTF program, ensuring compliance with FCA standards while overseeing the effective detection, prevention, and reporting of financial crime in our UK operations.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the FCA and UK law enforcement agencies regarding financial crime matters, ensuring all obligations are met.
  • Review and render decisions on Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), including complex cases that require careful judgment.
  • Supervise transaction monitoring, Customer Due Diligence (CDD)/Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) processes, and second-line assurance of outsourced or technology-enabled controls.
  • Assist in the preparation for FCA supervisory engagements, audits, and thematic reviews.
